Shanghai is a city of extremes, you'll see bright orange Lamborghini's passing men who are dragging along a trolley full of firewood. Because of these extremes, things can cost as much or little as you want it. If you want, you can get a local meal for $1 - e.g. noodles, dumplings, etc, but you can also easily spend $50 on a nice western meal and a glass of wine. It's likely you will get sick of eating noodles, so budget for a few western meals. If you like coffee and wine, it is as expensive as the west.

Rent is a biggie in Shanghai, a basic well located 1 room suite costs about $600-$800 a month and although many landlords want you to sign a 12 month lease, you'll be able to get ones for less time, check out craigslist.com.cn. You can get it cheaper by sharing or much more expensive - 5-10 times that for a modern complex with a lagoon.

Transport is dirt cheap, taxis are less than a few bucks to get to most places of interest, the subway is less than $1 anywhere.

But the big costs will be going out - if you want to eat and drink at western establishments and living. You could live on $1K/month easily, but if you want to have a lot of fun, best to bring much more.

Rent apartment in China (at least 600-800 USD/monthly.)
Firstly you can not take much money to China (limit is $10,000 usd), but maybe some body else can deposit from your country to your bank account in China, obviously before open an account in Bank of China. Bank commision $24.00 usd.
Buy food is not expensive, but you need to cook some times. But I believe you can survive.
Depends how you like espend money.

If you plan on studying in China, then you will need a student visa issued by the Chinese government. You will need to be registered as a full-time student with an accredited Chinese school and be sponsored by that institution in order to obtain a student visa.

As a full-time student in China, you will have very little time for "play". Chinese schools are notorious for their rigorous academic demands and endless workload. You can forget about "play". I suggest that you plan on work, more work, lack of sleep due to work, and extreme competition in the classroom. At best, you may have time to watch one movie per month.

If your housing and health care is arranged through the school, then you only need to worry about food, books, computer services, transportation, and utilities. You can expect to spend at least US$1,000 (CNY6500) per month on those items in Shanghai.

@ "We Never" -- There is no limit regarding how much money visitors can carry or wire into China, so stop providing bad information. Travelers carrying over US$10,000 in cash need to declare that to Customs, but so long as you declare it, you can carry an unlimited amount of cash. It is best to use bank wire transfers, debit cards, and other electronic means to transfer large amounts of money.

The limit is US$10,000 cash. I wouldn't advise that you carry much cash around in China due to the well-documented presence of pickpockets. For non-residence related monthly expenses & play, US$1200/month ought to do fine.

I lived in Shanghai for 2 years and I'm moving soon. You should bring a lot of money because you would probably want to shop at the Fake Market, eat out, etc. Btw, Shanghai is really really fun.

You are like:
Pretty good, BUT .. bla bla bla bla .. because YOU don't like it.
Hong Kong is impressive yet, BUT I mean look at those towers ... so ugly
